How it works

The tip is a percentage of the bill, and the total is the bill plus that tip. Splitting divides the total by the number of people, so everyone covers their share of both.

Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax figure is a matter of custom rather than arithmetic. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the stricter reading, since tax is not part of the service.

Rounding is worth doing deliberately. Rounding the per-person figure up to the nearest whole unit avoids fiddling with coins and usually adds very little to the total.

The formula

Tip

tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100)

Total

total = bill + tip

Per person

each = total ÷ number of people

Worked examples

A 64.50 bill at 18%64.50 × 0.1811.61 tip, 76.11 total
The same bill between 476.11 ÷ 419.03 each

When you'd use it

  • Splitting a restaurant bill
  • Working out a standard 15% or 20% tip quickly
  • Deciding a round per-person figure
  • Checking a service charge already added to the bill

Common questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Convention differs by country, and both are defensible. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the stricter reading because tax is not part of the service; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous.

What if service is already included?

Then a further tip is optional. Check the bill for a service charge line before adding anything — paying it twice is easy to do when the line is printed among the taxes.

How do I split unevenly?

This tool splits evenly. For shares in proportion to what each person ordered, use the ratio calculator and split the total by those amounts.
