How it works

Area factors are the square of the corresponding length factors, which trips people up. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.0929 m² — not 0.3048 m². Doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its area.

Land is measured in its own units. A hectare is 10,000 m² (a 100 m square), and an acre is 4,046.86 m² — historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day, which is why it is not a round number in any modern system.

There are roughly 2.471 acres to a hectare. That awkward ratio is worth checking rather than estimating when land value is involved.

The formula

m² → ft²

ft² = m² × 10.7639

ft² → m²

m² = ft² ÷ 10.7639

Any pair in this family

result = value × (factor of source ÷ factor of target)

Every unit is defined against the m2, so any combination converts in one step.

When you'd use it

  • Converting a property's floor area between systems
  • Comparing land in acres against hectares
  • Estimating flooring, paint or turf quantities
  • Reading a plan drawn in the other system

Common questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?

10.7639. Note this is the square of the length factor — since a metre is 3.2808 feet, a square metre is 3.2808², not 3.2808.

How big is an acre?

4,046.86 square metres, or about 0.405 hectares. It is not a square shape by definition — it is just an area, historically one chain by one furlong.

Why does doubling a room's size quadruple the area?

Because area is two-dimensional. Doubling both the length and the width multiplies the area by 2 × 2 = 4. The same reasoning is why area factors are squared length factors.

Is anything I enter sent anywhere?

No. Every conversion runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored. There is no account and no record of what you converted.
