How it works

The SI unit of force is the newton — the force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared. Everything here converts through it.

Kilogram-force and pound-force are the confusing ones, because they are forces named after masses. One kilogram-force is the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity, which is 9.80665 newtons. That is why a kitchen scale reading in kilograms is really measuring force and inferring mass.

The dyne is the CGS unit, one hundred-thousandth of a newton. It rarely appears in modern engineering but persists in some older physics literature.

Common questions

What is the difference between a kilogram and a kilogram-force?

A kilogram is mass; a kilogram-force is the weight of that mass under standard gravity, 9.80665 newtons. Scales blur the two because they measure force and display mass, which works only because gravity is near enough constant here.

How many newtons is one pound-force?

4.44822 N. Pound-force is the force gravity exerts on one pound of mass at standard gravity, which is why it converts through the same 9.80665 factor as kilogram-force does.

Why is force measured in newtons rather than kilograms?

Because force and mass are different quantities. The same mass weighs less on the Moon, but its mass is unchanged. Using newtons keeps the two separate, which matters as soon as gravity is not constant.
