How it works

Frequency counts events per second, and the hertz is exactly that — one cycle per second. The prefixes are plain powers of ten, so the conversions are simple decimal shifts.

Revolutions per minute is the same idea measured per minute instead, so 60 rpm is 1 Hz. Rotating machinery is quoted in rpm because the numbers land in a readable range; electronics uses hertz for the same reason at the other end of the scale.

Frequency and wavelength are inversely related through wave speed, so a higher frequency always means a shorter wavelength. The wavelength calculator handles that conversion directly.

Common questions

How do I convert rpm to hertz?

Divide by 60, since hertz counts per second and rpm counts per minute. 3,000 rpm is 50 Hz — which is exactly why a two-pole motor on a 50 Hz supply spins at 3,000 rpm.

What does hertz actually measure?

Cycles per second. A 50 Hz mains supply reverses direction 50 times a second; a 2.4 GHz signal oscillates 2.4 billion times a second. The unit replaced the older and more literal 'cycles per second' in 1960.

How is frequency related to wavelength?

Inversely, through the wave's speed: wavelength = speed ÷ frequency. Doubling the frequency halves the wavelength. Use the wavelength calculator for the full conversion including velocity factor.
