Final Grade Calculator
Enter your marks so far, the final exam's weight and the overall grade you want, and see exactly what the final has to be — or whether the target is out of reach.
How it works
Your target overall grade is a number of points out of 100. Subtract the points you have already banked from the completed work, and what is left has to come from the final — divided by the final's weight to express it as a percentage of that exam.
The answer can legitimately exceed 100%, and that is worth knowing early rather than late: it means the target is arithmetically unreachable no matter how well the exam goes. The tool says so plainly and shows the highest grade still available instead.
The formula
Score needed
needed = (target × (completed + final weight) ÷ 100 − current × completed ÷ 100) × 100 ÷ final weight
Highest still possible
points already earned + final weight
Worked examples
| Scenario | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 84% on 50% of the course, final worth 50%, target 80% | (80×100 ÷ 100 − 84×50 ÷ 100) × 100 ÷ 50 | 76% needed on the final |
| 50% on 60%, final worth 40%, target 80% | Needs more than the exam is worth | 125% — unreachable |
| 95% on 80%, final worth 20%, target 80% | Already secured | 0% — the target is safe |
When you'd use it
- Deciding how hard to revise for a final
- Checking whether a grade boundary is still in play

- Prioritising between two exams in the same week
Common questions
What does it mean if I need more than 100%?
The target cannot be reached even with a perfect final. The tool shows the highest grade still available so you can aim at that instead — and it is better to know before the exam than after.
What if the result is zero or negative?
You have already secured your target from the work completed. Even a zero on the final would leave you at or above it, though you should still check whether your course requires a minimum mark on the exam itself to pass.
Should the weights include the final?
No. Enter only the completed assessments in the table, and put the final's weight in its own field. The tool combines them.
Are my grades sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored. There is no account and no record of what you entered.
